Dr. Björg Sigríður Hermannsdóttir

Hello, and welcome to my page.

I am an HCPC registered Counselling Psychologist, offering online therapy sessions to people based in the UK and Iceland.

I have helped people address a range of presenting problems, including depression, anxiety, chronic stress, low confidence, post-traumatic stress/PTSD, and other life crises.

Areas of special interest

I am especially interested in helping people shift problematic relationship patterns that are impacting their wellbeing and satisfaction with life. This can include individuals struggling with a sense of isolation and lack of “real” connections, separation and divorce, dissatisfaction with a long-term partner, abusive relationships, difficult dynamics with parents and/or siblings, and challenges with colleagues or managers at work.

I am also very interested in working with people who have a tendency to neglect themselves, while focusing on what other people need and want. While some people are aware of this pattern in their life, others may mainly be aware of the impact of this – for example anxiety, guilt, resentment, and a sense of not being considered. If this is something you experience, you may want to read more here.

My Training and Experience

I completed my doctorate in psychology in the United States in 2014 and I have gained a wide range of experiences as a therapist. I have for example worked with students and staff in four university counselling services, in community mental health (including the NHS) with adults experiencing both acute and chronic difficulties, and a non-profit service for female survivors of abuse.

My Focus

In my therapy work I use a combination of different approaches and theories, depending on what might fit best for each person. My style is quite direct and interactive, meaning I ask questions, listen actively, challenge when needed, and share my thoughts on what I notice and what might be helpful. I firmly believe that each person has the potential to grow and change, and that by getting honest with ourselves we can get to the core of what we need and want.

Effective therapy goes beyond symptom relief; it helps people find their way to a meaningful life rooted in authenticity, connection, and personal agency. It all starts with an honest conversation and the willingness to get curious together. You can read more about my approach to therapy here.
